Speakers

Prof. Yannis Skarpelos

Yannis Skarpelos studied Sociology and holds a PhD in Visual Cultural Studies. He is teaching at the Department of Communication, Media and Culture (Panteion) since 1996. His interests are focusing on the sociological and semiotic visual analysis. The last decade his research is focused on computational analysis of big visual data, videogames and social network analysis.

Prof. Ugo Rossi

Ugo Rossi is Professor of Political and Economic Geography in the Area of Social Sciences. His research focusses on urban and regional development from a perspective of critical and radical human geography. In recent years, he has been interested in technology driven urban economies and their societal governance, conducting field research on smart-city strategies, start-up urbanism, platform economies, and the existential threat of fast urban revival.

Dr. Janet Merkel

Dr Janet Merkel is an urban sociologist and post-doc researcher working at the Chair of Urban and Regional Economics at the Institute of Urban and Regional Planning at Technical University Berlin. From 2015-2018 she has held a lectureship position (assistant professor) for CCIs at City, University of London. She also held research positions at the Berlin Social Science Center (WZB) in the research unit ‘Cultural Sources of Newness’ and at the Centre for Cultural Policy at Hertie School of Governance. Her research interests include new forms of work organization (coworking), CCIs, creative labour, urban politics and governance for culture and creative industries and cultural planning.

Dr. Athina Arampatzi

Dr. Athina Arampatzi is an HFRI Postdoctoral Research Fellow (PI) at the Dept. of Spatial Planning and Development, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. She received her PhD degree in Social Geography at the University of Leeds, UK and holds an MSc in Urban Sociology (University of Amsterdam) and an MA in Architecture (Aristotle University of Thessaloniki). Athina’s work engages with urban politics, governance and social movements.
