Call for Abstracts
MSCA CORAL-ITN Final Conference

The conference marks the end of the CORAL – ITN project whose mission is to understand the role and impact of collaborative workspaces (CWS) in rural and peripheral areas of Europe. During the two-day conference, researchers, invited speakers from CWS and policy makers will meet to discuss CWS in relation to global economic trends, regional development, communities and individuals from the perspective of various disciplines. The purpose is to focus on the phenomenon of CWS (i.e. coworking spaces, makerspaces, fablabs, creative and innovation hubs etc.) that are located primarily in rural or peripheral and remote areas. Research on this topic is emerging in recent years from numerous disciplines such as regional development and planning, rural studies, geography, business and management, sociology, architecture, design and economics.
We welcome papers that build on empirical and/or novel theoretical approaches and we are particularly interested in critical contributions which bring together the development of CWS and broader societal shifts and scientific discussions (e.g., remote work, inclusive workplace, digitalisation, platformization of labour, environmental change, social impact, rurbanity, spatial inequalities etc.).
Abstracts can focus in one or more of the following thematic areas:
- CWS impacts on local businesses/ freelancers
- CWS and their role in local business/ innovation ecosystems and other regional networks
- Wider social and cultural impacts of CWS in rural areas
- CWS as intermediate learning spaces, spaces for NEETs and alternative modes of education
- Labour arrangements and collaborative production in rural CWS
- Well-being in CWS
- Inclusive workplace, women-centred or women-only CWS
- Social innovation processes in rural CWS
- CWS as tools for local/ regional development policies
- The diverse functions of CWS in rural areas
- CWS and remote-work communities

Free accommodation for PhD students/ early career researchers
The conference marks the closing of the MSCA CORAL-ITN project funded by the European Commission. In that respect we aim to offer accommodation and lunches (11-14 November) for 10 PhD students or early career researchers to join the conference and present their paper. In order to be considered for free accommodation, send us your CV along with the abstract of your paper.
Important dates and guidelines
- NEW Deadline for abstracts submission: 13 September 2024
- Notification of accepted abstracts: 20 September 2024
- Length of abstracts: Maximum 300 words, excluding bibliography
- The conference starts at 18:00 11/11/2024 and ends at 19:00 13/11/2024
